The Cooked Out is a 1962 British thriller by Michael Carreras from the Hammer Films production . The main roles are played by Kerwin Mathews and Nadia Gray .
action
The story takes place in the south of France. The American painter Geoff has been abandoned by his wealthy lover Grace. He rents a pension run by the cafe owner Eve, an attractive middle-aged woman, and her stepdaughter Annette. Annette's father George is currently serving his imprisonment in a mental hospital for criminals who are dangerous to the public as a result of a serious crime: A few years ago he is said to have brutally murdered a certain Janiello, the rapist Annette, by torching him with a welding torch. Geoff soon shows interest in the young, attractive Annette, but is seduced by Eve. But are Eve's feelings really serious or doesn't she have perfidious, sinister plans in which Geoff should play a central role?
Eva says that while her ex George is in the insane asylum, she cannot go away with Geoff and start a new beginning together. Eve tries to convince Geoff to free George. In fact, the American agrees, and George is freed. But then another corpse appears. Is this second dead man possibly also on George's account? In the days and weeks that followed, fatal events occur that lead one to believe that George is still in the area and making sinister plans against his own family. But neither George nor Eve are what they appear to be, and the police inspector Etienne, who has stepped on the scene as a result of Georges, soon has his hands full unraveling the confusing network of relationships. Is George really the madman with the cutting torch, or has he gone to jail for Eve? Geoff soon realizes that his willingness to help has put himself in great danger.

Reviews
"One of the better British thrillers made as a result of Psycho ."
"Psychologically disguised ripper with horror effects, who cannot deny his proximity to the colportage."
"The chilling murder story, in which someone is not what they appear to be, is made in this case disgrace, with a devastatingly slow start."
“” Maniac ”has one thing and that abounds: a sly act. (...) Michael Carrera's direction is unequal and the characters are mostly quite limp (...) "Maniac" remains a blueprint with satanic tentacles for a much better film. "
