The mother Marie-Louise Boursault ( Annie Girardot ) raised her children Laura and Jean-Paul alone for years. Her lawyer husband Alexandre ( Jean Rochefort ) has left her because of her activities in the Socialist Party . Ten years go by. A Siberian winter is just moving into the city and daughter Laura ( Claude Jade ), who is studying psychology and medicine in Paris, is returning to the small town in the Jura. Over the years Laura has become a fighter for emancipation, while her mother hopes her husband will return. After initial reluctance, Laura falls in love with her mother's party friend, the teacher Marc Champenois ( Bernard Fresson ). When Marie-Louise wants to take back Alexandre, Laura sticks to her and insists on her father, who lives in the same town, to return. However, Laura's brother Jean-Paul (Bernard LeCoq) turns away and declares the mother crazy ...
