Khalid J. Baig

Khalid Javed Baig (born April 1, 1956 in Sargodha District , Punjab , † November 11, 2006 in Islamabad ) was a Pakistani herpetologist and conservationist .

Live and act

After graduating from public schools, Baig studied biology and chemistry at the University of the Punjab in Lahore , where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1976 . After completing two Masters courses at Quaid-e-Azam University in Islamabad in 1979 and 1983, he started as a research assistant at the Pakistan Museum of Natural History , where he was initially appointed curator of the herpetological department and finally headed the zoological department took over.

In 1990 he received a scholarship for the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn through the German Academic Exchange Service . With this he did research at the herpetological department of the Museum Koenig until March 1992 . In 1992 he was under the direction of Professor Wolfgang Böhme with the dissertation Systematic studies of the Stellio-group of Agama (Sauria: Agamidae). to the Dr. phil. PhD. Between 1989 and 1996, Baig studied herpetological museum collections and attended courses in herpetology at universities in Germany and the United States.

On November 11, 2006, Baig, his wife, and two other members of his family were killed in a car accident.

Baig described the four lizard and gecko species Laudakia pakistanica (BAIG, 1989), Altiphylax baturensis (KHAN & BAIG, 1992), Cyrtopodion rhodocauda (BAIG, 1998) and Eremias cholistanica BAIG & MASROOR, 2006

Dedication names

In 2008, the Pakistani herpetologist Rafaqat Masroor named the arched finger gecko species Cyrtodactylus baigii in honor of Baig.
