Kharan ( Urdu : خاران) is a city in the Kharan district of the same name in southwestern Pakistan in the Balochistan region .
Kharan is located 10 km from the Baddo River in a desert region. For a long time Kharan was a caravan station . Today salt, millet, wheat, dates, melons, carpets and baskets are traded. There is artificial irrigation. Farm animals are camels, goats and sheep. In the northeast of the city are the Kharan Airport (ICAO: OPKN) and the Kharan East Airport (also Khuzdar Airport, ICAO: OPKH, IATA: KDD).
The city, located at an altitude of 693 m, had 26,057 inhabitants according to a 1998 census, of which 13,623 men and 12,434 women; according to an estimate in 2006 it was 31,542.
History
Before and after the capture by the British, the city was a princely state whose rulers had the title of Mir or Nawab . The princely state existed as part of Pakistan until 1955.

Nuclear test 1998
Pakistan's first underground nuclear weapons tests took place on May 28, 1998 in the Ras Koh Hills, northwest of Kharan .

On January 18, 2011, the city and region were hit by an earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale .
