The Kharan District is an administrative district in Pakistan in the Balochistan Province . The seat of the district administration is the city of Kharan .

The district has an area of ​​14896 km² and according to the 2017 census 156,152 inhabitants. The population density is 10 inhabitants / km².

geography

The district is located in the center of the Balochistan Province, which is located in western Pakistan. Much of Kharan is made up of rough, mountainous, and desert-like terrain.

climate

The climate in Kharan is dry. Dust storms are common all year round. During the summer season, the days are hot and the nights are cool. Winter is dry and cold.

history

The district was the center of the princely state of Kharan , which existed from 1697 to 1955.

Demographics

Between 1998 and 2017, the population grew at an annual rate of 2.54%. About 29% of the population live in urban areas and about 71% in rural areas. 80,805 men and 75,347 women live in 24,035 households, which results in a gender ratio of 107.2 men per 100 women and thus a frequent surplus of men for Pakistan. The main ethnic group in the district are the Baluch. Baloch is the main language in the region and a minority speaks Brahui . The lingua franca is Urdu .

The literacy rate in 2014/15 among the population aged 10 and over was 44%, while it was only 27% among women.

economy

Most of the workers are employed in agriculture. There are deposits of chromite and manganese in the district .
