Kalat District is an administrative district in Pakistan in the Balochistan Province . The seat of the district administration is the city of Kalat .

The district has an area of ​​6621 km² and according to the 2017 census 412,232 inhabitants. The population density is 62 inhabitants / km².

geography

The district is located at the center of the Balochistan Province, which is located in western Pakistan. The district is located in the highlands of Balochistan.

climate

Kalat is one of the coldest areas in Pakistan. The district's climate is dry in summer and very cold in winter. Heavy snow falls in the town of Kalat due to the higher elevation. Spring is the most pleasant time in the region. In autumn it stays mild during the day and gets cold at night.

history

The area of ​​today's district was the center of the former princely state of Kalat , which existed from 1666 to 1955. There is still a khan based in Kalat who mainly performs ceremonial functions.

Kalat was given the status of a district on February 3, 1954, and included then current districts of Khuzdar , Mastung , Kachhi , Jhal Magsi and Nasirabad as subdivisions that were later separated from Kalat and became separate districts.

Demographics

The main tribes in Kalat are Mirwani, Dehwar, Mengal, Pandrani, Mohammad Hassani, Shahwani, Bangulzai, Lehri and Langau. The majority of the population in the district speaks Brahui , followed by Balochish . In 2009, the literacy rate of the population over 10 years was estimated at 42%. 64% of men and 13% of women have attended school.

Between 1998 and 2017 the population grew at an annual rate of 2.93% and therefore very quickly. Around 18% of the population live in urban regions and around 82% in rural regions. 211,695 men, 200,536 women and 1 transgender live in 55,497 households , which results in a gender ratio of 105.6 men per 100 women and thus a common surplus of men for Pakistan.

The literacy rate in 2014/15 among the population aged 10 and over was 54% (women: 45%, men: 61%).
