The district Zhob is an administrative district in Pakistan in the province of Baluchistan . The seat of the district administration is the city of the same name, Zhob . Zhob is one of the separately administered tribal areas.

The district has an area of ​​20,297 km² and according to the 2017 census 310,544 inhabitants. The population density is 15 inhabitants / km².

geography

The district is located on the north of the Balochistan Province, which is in the west of Pakistan. Much of the Zhob district consists of rough, mountainous and difficult to access terrain. The Zhob River flows through the area and is used for irrigation.

climate

The climate is relatively cold. In summer the weather doesn't get very hot. The region receives heavy rainfall in summer. The hilly areas at higher altitudes experience heavy snowfalls and blizzards in winter.

history

The region is considered the historical home of the Pashtuns (Afghans).

The district and its city were given the name Zhob in 1975. It used to be known as Fort Sandeman after Sir Robert Sandeman . Sandeman was an agent of the Governor General of Balochistan in the British era.

Demographics

The vast majority of the population of Zhob District is Pashtun, whose language Pashtun is also the majority language . The indigenous tribes of Zhob include the Mandokhail, Khosti, Sherani, Kakar, Harifal, Lawon and Babar.

Between 1998 and 2017, the population grew at an annual rate of 2.52%. Around 15% of the population live in urban regions and around 85% in rural regions. 168,358 men and 142,186 women live in 45,962 households, resulting in a gender ratio of 118.4 men per 100 women and thus a common surplus of men for Pakistan.

The literacy rate in 2014/15 among the population aged 10 and over was 43% (women: 18%, men: 64%).
