The district of Barkhan (in English transcription, in German transcription Barchan , Urdu بارکھان) is a district in the Pakistani province of Balochistan .
,description
The district of Barkhan was newly formed on December 31, 1991 by separation from the neighboring district of Loralai and named after its district capital. According to tradition, the name is derived from "Baron Khan", a former large landowner and local ruler. The eastern border of the district also forms the provincial border between Balochistan and Punjab . In the north the district is bordered by the Musakhel district and in the west by the Kohlu and Loralai districts. Administratively, the district was divided into 1 Tehsil and 8 Union Councils in 2011 .

The climate is predominantly continental with relatively cool winters and hot summers. Dust storms occur at any time of the year. In the months of July and August, the monsoons bring the greatest rainfall

history
The district essentially shared the history of the surrounding Balochistan. The area was under the changing rule of various Muslim rulers until the British colonial rulers intervened in the many local disputes in the second half of the 19th century and placed the area under direct British administration in 1878. From 1884 the area was under the British governor of Balochistan. After the end of British India in 1947, it became Pakistan.
economy
Agriculture is the economic basis. 39,215 hectares (11% of the area of the district) are used for agriculture. The total arable area of the district is estimated at 83,435 hectares (24% of the area of the district). Wheat is predominantly grown (in 2008 32,186 t on 16,600 ha), cotton on 3,731 hectares and various vegetables on 11,377 ha. Gypsum is mined in terms of minerals .
Population, culture and educational institutions
The majority of the population are Baluch, mainly from the tribes of the Khetran, Marri and Buzda. The dominant tribe are the Khetran. The vast majority of the population is Muslim and the religious leaders ( mullahs , sheikhs and sayyids ) have high authority, especially in rural areas. In the year, 26% of the population over the age of 15 had literacy skills. The average population growth between 1981 and 1991 was 3.1%.

In the Barkhan district, the first dinosaur finds in all of Pakistan were made in 2000 .
Baloch militant separatists are active in the district and are carrying out attacks on state facilities. The security situation is tense.
