The pine cone Bug ( Gastrodes grossipes ) is a bug from the family of rhyparochromidae .
features
The bugs are 5.5 to 7.3 millimeters long. One can distinguish the kind of Gastrodes abietum by its dark colored sides of the pronotum , by its generally darker reddish-brown coloring and by the first antennae that reaches behind the head. In addition, the pronotum is more dotted than in the similar species. Its scutellum is colored black.
distribution and habitat
The species is found in almost all of Europe except in the far north. In the east the distribution area extends over Asia Minor and the Caucasus , as well as to Siberia. In Central Europe, the species is widespread and mostly common.
Way of life
The animals live on Scots pine ( Pinus sylvestris ) and other pines ( Pinus ), less often on other pine plants (Pinaceae), such as. B. European larch ( Larix decidua ). In contrast to the other species of the genus Gastrodes, the females lay their eggs in rows on the needles of their host trees . The way of life is otherwise the same as that of Gastrodes abietum . The animals can also be found under bark, in cracks and in cones of conifers. They mainly suck on the needles of trees.
