Gastrodes abietum is a bug fromthe Rhyparochromidae family .
features
The bugs are 5.9 to 7.2 millimeters long. One can distinguish the species from the pine cone bug ( Gastrodes grossipes ) by its pale colored sides of the pronotum and by the first antennae that does not reach behind the head.
distribution and habitat
The species is widespread in Europe from the northern edge of the Mediterranean to the Arctic Circle. In the east the distribution area extends to Siberia. The species is absent in Atlantic influenced Western Europe. The species is widespread in Central Europe, but occurs mainly in the low mountain ranges and in the Alps up to the tree line. It is not uncommon and sometimes occurs frequently.
Way of life
The bugs use various conifers as host plants. In Central Europe, the most important host species is the Norway spruce ( Picea abies ). In addition, firs ( Abies ), pines ( Pinus ), larches ( Larix ), Douglas firs ( Pseudotsuga ) and cypress trees (Cupressaceae) are accepted as host plants.
The animals live in last year's lignified cones of conifers, where they suckle on the seeds. The nymphs in particular also suckle the needles of the trees. Outside the cones, the animals mainly suckle at night. The adults hibernate in the cones even after they have fallen to the ground. They are rarely found under bark scales on the trunk of the plants. It also happens that nymphs hibernate. In May, the females lay their eggs on the inside of the old cones. The adults of the new generation appear from July or August, more rarely earlier.
