features

The animals are 12 to 17 millimeters (males) or 18 to 22 millimeters (females) long. Their body is of a dark red-brown or gray-brown, rarely yellowish basic color. In the male, the shortened wings reach almost to the tip of the abdomen , in the female only to the middle of the abdomen.

habitat

The gravel bank grasshopper occurs on gravel banks of the Alpine rivers and in sandy heathland areas. The species has become very rare in Germany and is only known outside the Alps from the Berlin area and Lower and Upper Lusatia (Brandenburg, Saxony). In southern Bavaria, the insect occurs in the Isar floodplains and the Loisachaue.

Way of life

Adults occur from July to October. The males produce whirring noises of 1 to 2 seconds that sound like a soft, uniform "sssss".

Hazard and protection

The gravel bank grasshopper is classified as critically endangered (category 1) on the red list of endangered species in Germany . The main cause of its endangerment is the destruction of its habitats.
