The Kiessee Klein Schneen (also Baggersee Klein Schneen or small Schneener Lake ) is a quarry pond in the village Friedland south of Göttingen . It emerged from a gravel construction and today, together with its bank zones, serves as a swimming lake and recreational area for the local population as well as for diving .

description

The lake is located on the southern outskirts of Klein Schneen. The water surface of the Kiessee is about 4.4 hectares (length at the largest point approx. 300 meters, width approx. 200 meters) and (as of 2014) has not been used for gravel mining for years . However, the mining rights still exist, so that renaturation or tourist use is not yet considered possible. The Göttingen – Friedland – Eichenberg railway line runs directly on the east side.

Two other quarry ponds are in the immediate vicinity, also south of Klein Schneen. A few meters south of the Kiessee there is a smaller (approx. 235 × 95 m; 1.57 hectare area; 590 m circumference) and mainly used for fishing and leased from ASV Leinetal on private property. About 1 km south on the other side of the railway line is another 2 hectare lake (approx. 223 × 115 m; 703 m circumference). The lakes are located in the Leinetal, the river flows a few hundred meters east of the three lakes to the north, between the towns of Klein Schneen and Groß Schneen.

Diving and ecology

The Kiessee Klein Schneen is (as of 2011) leased from the Eichsfeld diving center and is considered easy to dive in the shallow water area; in the deeper area, the lake is described as hilly with canyons. The water depth is up to 18 m. There are reports of many metal parts in the lake that can interfere with navigation. At a depth of 5 m there is a platform to which you can dive using a pole.

With a surface temperature of 19 ° C, a water temperature of 12 ° C was measured in September 2012 at a depth of 7 meters. As part of this study, a large number of freshwater organisms were registered in the lake, including a number of fish species, water mites , cnidarians , snails , mussels , woodlice , dragonfly larvae and freshwater sponges , although no pond mussel larvae despite the search . At the same time, the water quality of the lake was determined based on the plant material found. The macrophyte index was 3.7. In the surface area there are spotted thousand-leaf algae , chandelier algae , waterweed and spawning herbs ; from a depth of 10 m, underwater vegetation was no longer found. The investigations were supported by the gravel mining company August Oppermann GmbH.

Bathing ban

The lake created in the course of gravel mining has been used as a local recreation area since the 1960s, especially by the population from Klein Schneen, Groß Schneen and other places in the immediate vicinity. Access to the lake has always been free and free, but bathing is officially prohibited. As at the Rosdorf Baggersee lake , which is a few kilometers away , there are neither toilets nor regular waste disposal here . The Kiessee Klein Schneen was hardly known to anyone in nearby Göttingen as a bathing lake, but it came into the focus of reporting in the summer of 2014 when the left and the pirates made demands for toilets and regulated waste disposal at the Rosdorf Baggersee after June 5 In 2014 the municipality of Friedland had banned bathing in all waters of the municipality by statute resolution.
