Kiezpark Fortuna (Berlin)
Fortuna neighborhood park

The Kiezpark Fortuna ( spelling : kiezPARK FORTUNA ) is a privately owned park in the Berlin district of Marzahn , which was created on a former fallow area under the management and significant financial participation of Fortuna Wohnungsunternehmen eG and was handed over to the public in August 2012.

location

The Kiezpark is located on the north-eastern outskirts of Berlin in the Marzahn-Hellersdorf district between Oberweißbacher Straße, Sitzendorfer Straße and Schwarzburger Straße in a new building district that is bordered to the north by Wuhletalstraße, east by Blumberger Damm, south and west by Mehrower Allee.

history

Today's Kiezpark was previously a location for two schools and is surrounded by typical six- and eleven-story new buildings in industrial production. Fortuna Wohnungsunternehmen eG has been renovating this stock of around 1,500 residential units since 2005. Shortly afterwards, the schools began to be demolished, so that a wasteland was created between the apartment blocks . Due to a lack of funds, the public sector was unable to make targeted use of the 11,000 m² area. After the renovation of the surrounding buildings was completed, Fortuna acquired the property in order to dedicate it to an orderly use as a park.

Planning, construction phases and public participation

Tenants and residents as well as neighboring institutions, associations and above all partners of the Fortuna network KIEZnet founded a regular get-together. An advisory board was set up to accompany the project with ideas and advice during the implementation phase. Interested and active people were informed about the progress of the project at several information events. With funding from the European Union program and urban redevelopment east , the park was planned, designed and built together with the residents in three construction phases over two years.

The overall process was moderated by the ARGE Su Schnorbusch / Almuth Krause Architektur / Landschaftsarchitektur . In the public relations and in various workshops , the project of which was LAYON Advertising Design & Communication GmbH accompanies.

Right from the start, the brainstorming, planning, construction work and the respective status quo were documented on the Kiezpark's own website. There it was also possible to register for workshops and events.

The first fruit trees were planted in the area facing Oberweißbacher Strasse in October / November 2010. With the completion of the adjacent path and a wild fruit hedge, the orchard was the first part of the Kiezpark to be completed in summer 2011.

In the second construction phase, paths, beds and areas were marked out. Wildflower meadows, lawns and residential beds were created, which Fortuna tenants have created and maintain.

During the earthworks, old remains of the foundations had to be removed again and again in order to build the paths, lay the water pipes and create the grass fields, owner-occupier and wild meadow areas and to be able to excavate and model the pond.

In the third construction phase, the pergola with benches and lockers for the garden tools was built. On the square next to the pond, the wooden garden room was created in unity and continuation with the pergola. The pond and the stream got a fence. The last plants were planted and grass sown on former fallow land.

Citizen participation was controlled in a participation process. Different interests of the groups involved were taken up, implemented and linked in specific workshops.

In the Kiezreporterinnen workshop, 10 to 15-year-old girls from the Kiez reported on wall newspapers about their observations in the growing Kiezpark. They took photos and conducted interviews. In the post design workshop, boys between the ages of 11 and 16, with artistic guidance, designed 3-frame posts in color to support the young fruit trees on the orchard . Similar workshops on the design of the park took place among others. a. on the topics of tree signs, seating elements, Kiezpark flags and puzzle poetry. In October 2011, senior citizens and children from the adjacent day care center planted early blooming islands with flower bulbs. The daycare children and their parents held workshops on the design of the water playground and worked together on tree trunks that now surround the water playground as seating elements. The rotating dice game, which is integrated into the pergola, was designed and completed jointly by daycare children and a wood workshop.

Groups of people involved in the workshops:

  • Seniors (residents from around 60 years)
  • Kita (children up to 7 years of age and their parents)
  • Children and adolescents (girls aged 8 to 15 years and boys aged 8 to 16 years)
  • Fortuna tenants and other residents

In addition, the TU Berlin , Department of Systems Ecology, Plant Science could be involved in the creation of the wildflower meadows.

The Kiezpark Fortuna was officially opened with a big summer party on August 25, 2012 and handed over to the residents and the general public.

After the park is completed, volunteer residents will continue to work on the Kiezpark advisory board and will take care of the park's interests together with Fortuna.

Park design

In the open meadow there are rare, old types of fruit, e.g. B. White Mulberry , Red Star Renette , Mirabelle von Metz or Cornelian Cherry , bordered by a wild fruit hedge. Information boards provide information about the respective old types of fruit - when and how they bloom and are provided with images of the fruit, since when this type of fruit has existed, where it comes from and what it was used for in the past.

In addition, wildflower meadows, lawns and residential beds were created by the FORTUNA tenants.

An approx. 40 meter long pergola with benches and lockers for garden tools was built on a curved yellow path. A wooden garden room was created as an extension of the pergola. There are regular events of the Kiezpark Advisory Board and meetings of the residents.

A wooden rotating dice game with a row of 3 and a row of 5 with colored children's motifs was integrated into the pergola in two places.

In the middle of the complex are a pond and a stream. The pond was decorated with gravel, stones and water plants and was given a fence for safety. A stream flows towards the pond, under a small bridge. It is lined with stones and borders.

There is also a water playground in the Kiezpark, which can also be used by the public.

Various types of seating and lounging elements, mostly made of wood, are distributed around the water playground and throughout the park.

Social sustainability

The Kiezpark Fortuna is a park by residents for residents. The continued use and maintenance and the continuous offer to the neighborhood residents to take part in neighborhood park campaigns and events and thereby to network various population groups are important components of sustainable neighborhood development.
