The Killarney National Park ( Irish : Páirc Náisiúnta Chill Airne ) is located in County Kerry in the southwest of the Republic of Ireland on the Iveragh Peninsula .

The over 100 km² national park borders the city of Killarney and includes the three lakes Lough Leane , Muckross Lake and Upper Lake, which together make up an area of 22 km² of the park. One of the oldest of the remaining oak forests in Ireland can be found here. In addition to the oaks, yew trees , mosses, lichens and ferns also grow lush in the park . As in the whole of southwest Ireland, due to the influence of the Gulf Stream, there are numerous flowering plants in the national park that are otherwise only known from the Mediterranean, for example the shrubby strawberry trees and large rhododendron shrubs. The rhododendronhas become a problem for the park in recent years. In the mild, humid climate it finds ideal growing conditions and threatens to overgrow large parts of the park. One tries to contain the plague with the help of work camps .

The Muckross House can be described as the tourist center of the Killarney National Park . The Herbert family mansion, built in 1843, can be visited and is picturesquely located on the shores of Muckross Lake, surrounded by manicured lawns, a beautiful flower garden and a rock garden.

A tourist center has been built near Muckross House from which one can visit the Kerry County Life Experience. The visitor gets an insight into rural life around 1930 and can watch craftsmen at work.

From the Muckross House you can explore the area with single-axle horse-drawn carriages or on foot. A popular destination is the Torc waterfall . Tower House Ross Castle is located on a headland in Lough Leane , where you can get an insight into the everyday life of a clan chief.

The island Innisfallen Iceland can the once powerful monastery with its remains of Innisfallen Abbey to the public. You can get an overview of Upper Lake from Ladies' View, a popular tourist stop on the Ring of Kerry , which was used by Queen Victoria's ladies-in- waiting. There is also a well-developed network of signposted hiking trails that lead around the lakes and along the slopes of the surrounding mountains.

Parts of the park are crossed by the Kerry Way long-distance footpath .
