The Killean and Kilchenzie Parish Church is a church building of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland near the Scottish village of Muasdale on the Kintyre Peninsula . It is located on a cape called A 'Chleit on Gigha Sound off the A83 , which connects Campbeltown to the Central Belt . It is the main church of the Parish Killean and Kilchenzie . In 1971 the Killean and Kilchenzie Parish Church was included in the Scottish Monuments List in the highest category A. The church is still in use as such today.

history

In 1770 the roof of the medieval Killean Chapel , which until then had been the main church in the area, collapsed . For this reason a new church building was planned, for which the architect Thomas Cairns was probably responsible. Construction probably began in 1787 and the building was completed in 1791 after four years of construction. In 1879 the church received a small bell tower designed by Robert Weir . Eleven years later, a community hall was added along with the construction of the adjacent school. In the 1970s, the northern gallery was converted and premises were set up there.

description

The Killean and Kilchenzie Parish Church has typical features of Georgian architecture . In the center of the protruding entrance area is the double-leaf entrance door. This is surrounded on both sides by blinding pillars. Above that there is a small lattice window, above which there is a detached gable triangle. Recessed arched windows are let in on both sides of the door and are now closed with masonry. Above and in the center of gravity of the gable surface there are blind ox eyes today . A small, open bell tower rises above the top of the gable. Lattice windows, usually arched windows, are installed along the other facades. The building ends with a hipped roof . All facades are plastered using the traditional Harling technique. The marble pulpit was donated by Norman Macaslister in 1818.
