Kilteel Castle (Ireland)
Kilteel Castle

Kilteel Castle ( Irish Caisleán Chill Chéile ) is a 15th century tower house in the village of Kilteel ( Cill Chéile ) on the southwest corner of the Pale in County Kildare, Ireland .

history

On the border of the Pale

In the Middle Ages, Kilteel Castle served as a frontier fortress on the Marshes of the Pale against the attacks of the O'Byrne and O'Toole families from County Wicklow . In 1335 King Edward III wrote. Letters demanding that those charged with defending the marshes take up their duties at Kilteel, Rathmore and Ballymore stations ; he mentioned the "pillage and pillage of" Obryn "( O'Byrne ) and his cronies". A 1488 law defining the boundaries of the "four obedient provinces" of Louth, Meath, Dublin and Kildare stated that the boundaries of the Pale passed through Kilteel and Rathmore. A law of 1494/1495 required that the boundary be "a double trench six feet above the ground on one side or part of it pointing to the Irish side". Part of the boundary of the Pale with traces of a possible earthen bastion can be seen in aerial photographs southeast of the medieval church of Kilteel. Archaeological digs suggest that the remains continue eastward and form the border between the townlands of Kilteel Upper and Cupidstown .

Tower House

Kilteel Castle 1833

A strong tower house was built in the 15th century to reinforce and replace the old defenses. This five-story building with a rectangular floor plan contains four upper floors above a ground floor with a vaulted ceiling . The ceiling on the 3rd floor also has a vault. A gatehouse is attached to it in the southwest . Originally there was also an enclosure. An illustration of the castle in the Dublin Penny Journal from 1833 shows a steep- gabled house , possibly from the late 17th or early 18th century. In the archives of Trinity College Dublin there is an undated drawing from the Edwin Rae Collection showing a similar building. A cannonball, possibly from the 17th century, was found near the castle in 1901.
