Kim Hyesoon (born October 26, 1955 in Uljin , Kyŏngsangbuk-do ) is a South Korean poet .

Life

Kim Hyesoon was born in 1955 in Uljin , North Kyŏngsang Province , and studied Korean literature at Kangwon National University and Konkuk University . In 1979 she made her debut in the magazine Literatur und Intellekt (Munhak-kwa chisŏng) with Smoking Poets (Tambae-rŭl p'iu-nŭn siin) and four other poems, making her one of the first women to publish in this magazine. Kim gained great fame in the late 90s. She was the first woman to receive the prestigious Kim Su-yŏng Literature Prize.

Kim's central themes are emancipation and the hope for freedom in Korean society, themes that she expresses in her experimental work that is detached from conventions. She is one of the most famous modern poets in Korea.

She currently teaches creative writing at the Seoul Institute of the Arts.
