Kim Ku-yong (born May 2, 1922 in Sangju , Kyŏngsangbuk-do , † December 28, 2001 in Seoul ) is a South Korean poet .

Life

Kim Ku-yong (born Kim Yŏng-T'ak, 김영탁) was born on May 2, 1922 in Sangju, Kyŏngsangbuk-do . During the Japanese colonial era , Kim lived in various Buddhist temples , including the Tonghak Temple , where he studied the classical texts of Buddhism , Confucianism and Taoism . After the liberation from colonial rule, he enrolled at Sungkyunkwan University , where he completed his studies in Korean literature.

He made his official literary debut in 1949 - while still a student - with the publication of his works Night in the Mountains (산중 야) and Ode to the White Pagoda (백탑 송) in the magazine 'Sinch'ŏnji' 신천지. He also demonstrated lyrical talent with his works Flucht (탈출 脫出), Radiant Heart (분광 (噴 光) 의 심장), Scattered (산재 (散 在)) and The Naked Slave (적라 (赤裸) 한 노예). He also published the poetry volumes Poetry Collection 1 (시집 1) 1969, Poems (시) 1976 and Neun Lieder (구곡) 1978.

During the time after the devastating Korean War , Kim concentrated on his poetic goal, the processing of the psychosocial and political upheaval in the post-war period, with the help of Buddhism . Since then Kim has used the form of prose in his poems, which avoids internal breaks and subdivisions that arise from the lines and stanzas of traditional verse formation. In order to preserve at least one poetic element in his works, he uses a poetic language rich in semantic possibilities. The lack of rigid verse formation in his works even increases the tension in his poetic language.

Kim's poetic career changed from post-war prose poetry to longer poems such as B. Ode to the benefits of the Goddess of Mercy (관음찬 (觀音 讚)), Dream Ideal (꿈 의 이상 (理想)) and Six Songs (육곡 (六 曲)). These longer poems express the poet's desire to penetrate the core of self-confidence, but they also have a philosophical profundity that would be difficult to convey through shorter forms of poetry. Although the roots of Kim's thoughts are in Buddhism , his poetry also reveals the strong influence of Western surrealism in the development of the poet's aesthetic.
