With him as a striker, the club rose from the third-class Division 1 to the Svenska Superligan within two years from 2005 to 2007 . After Kalmarssund's relegation, he moved to AIK Innebandy in summer 2008 . With them he reached the superfinal in the first season, but could not win it.

At the Floorball World Cup in Finland in 2010 he reached the final against the hosts with the national team , but they lost it 6-2. Two years later at the Floorball World Cup in 2012 he reached the final again with the national team, this time the Swedish selection won. Nilsson was elected to the All-Star-Team, was top scorer with 22 points and received the MVP -Trophy as best player. This award was given for the first time at a men's World Cup. In 2014 he was able to win the world title again together with the Swedish national team and was also elected to the Allstar team.

In 2014, Kim Nilsson separated from his equipment supplier Unihoc and signed a 5-year contract with floorball equipment supplier Salming . He won the world title again with the national team. In the same year he also announced his move from the Swedish first division club AIK Innebandy to the Swiss NLA to the Grasshopper Club Zurich . There he received a 2-year contract with an annual salary of 100,000 francs , the transfer was financed by private sponsors. In the contract it was also agreed that he would return to the AIK Innebandy after the 2 years. With GC he won the Swiss championship title in 2016 and was elected MVP of the season.

Back from Switzerland, he moved back to his parent club FBC Kalmarsund, which played in the second-class Allsvenskan Södra at the time, for a record transfer sum of 1.4 million SEK (around 160,000 Swiss francs or almost 150,000 euros) . In the run-up to the transfer, AIK even asked for a transfer fee of SEK 1.8 million. He signed a two-year contract with the Ölanders. In the 2017/2018 season he was promoted to the Svenska Superligan with Kalmarsund.
