Kim Seung-ok , also Kim Sŭng-Ok (born December 23, 1941 in Osaka , Japan ) is a South Korean writer .

Life

Kim Seung-ok was born on December 23, 1941 in Osaka, Japan . In 1945 he moved to Korea . He grew up in Sunch'ŏn , a city in southern Korea, and completed his studies in French literature at Seoul National University . Since he began studying in 1960, the year the April Revolution broke out, he is often assigned to the “April 19th Generation”.

In 1962 he won the annual literary competition of the Hankook Ilbo ( Korea newspaper ) with his story Practice Life . This made him known in the literary scene. In the same year he founded the literary magazine '' Sanmun sidae ( prose time ) with his fellow students Kim Hyŏn and Ch'oe Ha-rim , in which he a. a. published his fantasy notebook .

Since then he has been active as a writer. Mujin im Nebel (1964) made him the most important representative of the new literary trend . The unusual atmosphere and the special style in his texts, in which he thematizes human existence with all its disillusions , were considered representative of the self-contempt of the students at that time.

In 1965 he was awarded the Tong-in Literature Prize for his story Seoul, Winter 1964 . According to the critics, in this story the author completed his unique literary world, in which he describes the everyday life of the city and the inner world of its self-despising petty bourgeoisie in his typically dry style. In 1977 he was the first recipient of the Yi Sang Literature Prize , which he was awarded for his story Moonlight over Seoul: Kapitel Null . This enabled Kim Seung-ok to consolidate his position as an experienced writer. With the stories The Manner of the 60s and Fertility , which show a certain erotic tendency, he tried to overcome the disillusionment of modern man. But even this attempt failed to destroy his own unusually persistent disillusion. He turned to Christianity and stopped writing stories. For thirty years he has published essays on his religious experiences and lives as a devout Christian. Since 1999 he has been teaching Korean literature at Sejong University .

In 2004 Munhakdongnae published the entire story of Kim Seung-oks.
