Shell money
In addition to the official currency, the kina , the shell money fathom is also in use. The unit of the complementary currency is 1 fathom , which consists of a chain of numerous small mussels of the genus Nassariidae , which can be stretched between two outstretched arms. The name fathom is derived from the English word for "thread", which is also a nautical measure of length and corresponds to 1.8288 meters. An English Fathom is roughly equivalent to a German fathoms .
