history

Before the country's independence was the currency unit of the British-French condominium of the New Hebrides on Franc .

Motifs

Many Vanuatu currency coins have motifs typical of the country.

The 1000 Vatu note shows an outrigger canoe typical of the South Pacific .

The 5000 vatu note depicts one of the diving platforms that are built from bamboo poles on the island of Pentecost according to an old tradition. Young men tie lianas to their feet and jump into the depths , which served as a model for bungee jumping .
