Kinaros ( Greek Κίναρος ( f. Sg. )) Is a Greek island in the municipality of Leros in the South Aegean region .
location
Kinaros belongs to a group of six small islands and some rocky islands that lie between the Dodecanese islands of Leros and Kalymnos in the east and the Cycladic island of Amorgos in the west. Astypalea is to the south . In addition to Kinaros with 4,577 km², this group of islands consists of Plaka in the west, Glaros, the two Mavra Islands and Levitha in the east.
On the south side of the island there are some deep, fjord-like bays that act as natural anchorages and offer protection from northern winds. The west side has steep, inaccessible banks. The typical plants of the macchia and phrygana determine the landscape.
history
Due to its geographical location, Kinaros was an important anchorage for boat trips between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese in ancient times. It is believed that there was a small settlement on the island. The remains of the building have been archaeologically proven.
Kinaros today
After the isolated island was abandoned by its inhabitants in 1960, it was repeatedly briefly inhabited by fishermen. In 2000 an elderly couple settled back on the island. The residents ran some agriculture for self-sufficiency and kept a few goats. A photovoltaic system was installed for power supply . Since there is neither landline nor mobile phone reception on the island, efforts have been made to set up internet access via satellite. The man died in 2013 and the woman is the only resident of the island. However, the couple was not registered there in the 2011 census.

Kinaros can be reached from Amorgos or Kalymnos with speed boats. In the summer months, day trips are offered from Leros and Egiali on Amorgos. The only inhabitant of the island is - apart from her self-sufficiency - taken care of by a fishing boat from Amorgos.
