King's Quest 8: Mask of Eternity is an adventure game and was published by Sierra Entertainment (formerly Sierra Online) in 1998. It is the eighth and last part of the King's Quest series. It is the only game in the series in which the character is not King Graham or a member of his family.
foreplay
Over the kingdom of Daventry is the realm of the sun, where magical beings called archons protect the mask of eternity. The mask is an artifact that maintains truth, light, and rank. Your guide Lucreto, however, becomes angry and smashes the mask into pieces. When part of the mask falls into the feet of a humble tanner named Connor Maclyrr, he picks it up and everyone in the kingdom of Daventry turns to stone and the land becomes sick.
countries
In order to collect all the shards of the Mask of Eternity, Connor has to travel through a variety of topographically different countries. These include:
- The Kingdom of Daventry is the land where Connor owns his home and where his royal quest begins. Here he meets a wizard who offers him instructions on how to find the remaining pieces of the Mask of Eternity.
- The dimension of death is ruled by Lord Azriel and serves as a pseudo-purgatory in which souls await their judgment. This land is on a level outside of any other possible land in the game, and consequently Connor must find the gates to make it accessible. After the Mask of Eternity was broken, the mission of the universe was accordingly obliterated, and Lord Azriel's skeletal soldiers became irrepressible and rebellious. So it becomes part of Connor's mission to suppress the ascent.
- The swamp bears part of the mask of eternity within its borders. Although the swamp is not far from the Kingdom of Daventry, the Lucreto disaster left obstacles blocking the road to the swamp. Consequently, Connor must first travel through The Dimension of Death to reach the swamp and obtain another shard of the mask.
- The underground kingdom of the gnomes consists mainly of tunnels beneath the mountainous south of the swamp. During his journey, Connor meets the gnomes who are trying to restore an exit above their underground house.
- The barren area is located above the underground realm of the gnomes and at the foundation of a volcano. It can be accurately characterized by its abundance of lava flows and dry, hot terrain. Before the disaster, residents of this region traded regularly with those who lived on the top of the volcano.
- The frozen realms are the cold lands at the top of the volcano that orbits a lake of icy water. It is inhabited by the Snow Nymphs, Ice Orcs and Gryphs.
- Paradise Lost is a small collapse crater near the frozen areas and has the shape of a stone circle, which serves as a gate to the realm of the sun.
- The realm of the sun , like the dimension of death, is not physically connected to any other part of the world in which Connor's search takes place. The land was a storage place for the Mask of Eternity and is the place where Connor should bring all his broken pieces back. Here Connor confronts Lucreto to determine his decisive fate.
At the beginning of the game, the half-stone wizard that Connor meets conjures up a magical map for him, which shows him all areas that have already been explored. It also allows Connor to teleport between the countries as soon as the teleportation points of the respective country (except the Empire of the Sun) have been opened.
Difference from the rest of the King's Quest series
Generally positive but mixed reviews have been written about the mask of eternity. The game sold relatively well compared to other adventure games at the time. Even so, many fans did not consider the game a “real” King's Quest game because of its 3D computer graphics , the almost complete absence of the Daventry royal family and the predominance of Diablo- like violence that did not appear in a previous game.
