The spiny- edged jointed turtle ( Kinixys erosa ) is a tortoise (Testudinidae) from the genus of the jointed turtle ( Kinixys ).

features

The front edge of the brown-colored upper shell is noticeably flattened and elongated. This jagged shell shape led to the name " spine-jointed tortoise ". The edges of the armor plates on the upper side ( carapace ) are colored dark brown or black, while the inner part of the armor plates usually has a brown-yellow color. The limbs, head and tail are yellow- ocher . The plastron protrudes further out in the front part than the upper armor. Males generally have longer and thicker tails than females. Adult animals can reach a size of up to 30 cm.

Habitat and Distribution

The diurnal jointed jointed turtles are native to the tropical rainforests of West Africa , namely Ghana , Gabon and Togo to the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo . There the animals live on humus, partly deciduous soils and require high humidity.

nutrition

The Kinixys erosa feeds mainly on plant food such as grass , herbs and various fruits .

Reproduction

Mating can take place throughout the year. The males circle and ram the females and then mate with them.
