Hottenstein Church

The Church of Hottenstein in the Wuppertal district of Oberbarmen is the originally Lutheran place of worship inaugurated in 1879 for the farmers from Nachbarebreck and the urban population of the ridge on the Hottenstein .

history

Like the eastern part of Barmen , the area of Nachbarebreck belonged to the Lutheran parish of Schwelm after the Reformation . The Lutheran congregations in Wichlinghausen and Wupperfeld broke away from the Schwelm mother congregation in 1744. The next Breck, which was still sparsely populated at that time, remained with Schwelm. In the course of industrialization , the population grew rapidly along the coal route from Witten to Barmen. From the end of the 18th century onwards, the first church services were held in the school house on Hottenstein, in 1851 the community of Nachbarebreck was proclaimed a branch community of Schwelm, in 1875 a separate assistant preacher from Schwelm was assigned to this community and finally in 1877 the deed of establishment for an independent community was issued. The first services of the new congregation were held in a private house, at the same time the newly elected presbytery was busy building a church: the building site was acquired in 1877 and the architect Heinrich Bramesfeld was commissioned with the planning. Thanks to the simple wooden structure and favorable weather, the building, which cost around 32,000 gold marks , was erected between May and December and inaugurated on December 17th of that year.

architecture

The building is a wooden half-timbered construction with a simple saddle roof , a simple bell tower crowning the gable of the northeast facade and a rectangular choir extension in the southwest. The northeastern entrance facade is divided into three axes; a two-winged entrance door, the wooden frame of which as well as all the windows of the church are painted white, opens up the ground floor and the church room. The building is completely outside verschiefert ; the windows on the ground floor are provided with shutters painted green according to the tradition in the Bergisches Land.

Hottenstein Church

The ground floor was originally a parish apartment and a room for confirmation classes, while the church hall, which can accommodate 259 people, is located on the upper floor. This is divided into three naves and four yokes with arched windows by wooden supports. The middle nave is higher than the side aisles and thus follows the spatial concept of a basilica (without the upper cladding ) - the ceilings are drawn into the gable roof using the then new Rabitz technology . Since the building does not follow the outline of the basilica from the outside, it is called a pseudo-basilica . The interior of the apse is designed as a three-eight choir, the altar is located in front of another arched window, the octagonal wooden pulpit is attached to the right corner of the triumphal arch . There is an organ gallery at the entrance facade. The furnishings , including the wooden stalls from the time of construction, which are divided into three parts, have been completely preserved. The current painting of the wooden furnishings in the colors light blue, gray, rust red and gold comes from a restoration in 1965/66, during which today's leaded glass windows were also used.

In its simple execution, the building follows typical elements of the Bergisch rural architecture. Plans by the community in 1909 to replace the church, which was perceived as too simple, with a stone church with 800 seats were prevented by the First World War. Another attempt in the later 1930s failed due to the currency reform in 1948. The addition of a stone sacristy from 1953 to the southern corner of the building is the only relic of such planning. The church of the next breck, which was incorporated into Barmen in 1922 and was absorbed with him in Wuppertal in 1929, has belonged to the uniate parish of Wichlinghausen-next breck since 2003 together with the Wichlinghauser and Erlöserkirche . Because of its "good quality of architecture and decor", which makes the building "a rare example of Bergisch church construction", the church was placed under monument protection in 1989.
