The Evangelical Church of John the Baptist is located in the Diemitz district of the eastern district of Halle (Saale) . It belongs to the Johannesgemeinde Halle in the parish of Halle-Saalkreis of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany . It is entered in the list of cultural monuments in Halle (Saale) under registration number 094 12034 .

history

The first documented mention of Diemitz can be traced back to 1370, when the village and estate passed into the ownership of Henricus and Bertram Peisker from Halle. At that time the village also had a cloister courtyard with a church. With the Reformation the church became a branch of the St. Ulrich Church in Halle. The village, which was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War , remained uninhabited until its end. After the parish returned, the church was rebuilt in 1647.

Due to the emerging industrialization in the 19th century, the number of inhabitants and with it the number of parishioners increased, so that in 1881 a separate parish could be founded.

From 1886 to 1888 the church was renovated and rebuilt by the Giese architects . The north wall of the church and the old sacristy were demolished; the western entrance closed. An extension was built on the north side to create more space for the community and the church.

A comprehensive restoration took place between 1997 and 2000.

Architecture and equipment

The baroque- style church has a plastered, rectangular church hall with a three-sided choir closure and arched windows with a profiled sandstone frame. On the western side an octagonal slate-covered roof turret was put on. The extension on the north side accommodates the sacristy and the Wendelstein for the upper gallery , as well as the new church entrance.

Since the renovation in the 19th century, the church has had a dark coffered ceiling in a dark wood tone and a west and north gallery. The polygonal wooden pulpit , which rests on an octagonal pulpit carrier, was redesigned during the renovation. The font made of wood is also octagonal and decorated sparingly.

The organ built in 1934 (13 registers , two manuals and pedal ) comes from the Zörbig workshop of Wilhelm Rühlmann junior. (1882-1964).

During the renovation in the 90s of the 20th century, the church received a new altar in 1998 by the Halle painter Bernd Baumgart . The altar painting from the 1830s is on the north gallery.

graveyard

Military cemetery

In the Diemitz cemetery surrounding the church , where baroque tombs have also been preserved, a soldiers' memorial was built between 1931 and 1935 for those who fell in the First World War with a memorial stone for those who fell in the Franco-German War in 1870/71 based on a design by Hildegard Theeßen. In front of the crosses, which are lined up at short intervals and commemorate 82 fallen and missing persons from the First World War, there is an oversized Jesus sculpture (from 1934) praying for the dead.
