The Church of the Name of Jesus is a Roman Catholic parish church in the 12th district of Meidling in Vienna . It was built in 1950 according to plans by Josef Vytiska and is located at Darnautgasse 3.

history

In the densely populated working-class district of Meidling, an emergency church was built in 1932 in a former empty leather factory . Architect Bruno Buchwieser senior added a simple campanile on which a large cross shone at night. The population called the church the Zweigroschenirche because it was largely financed by donations from readers of the Zweigroschenblatt . The church space held around 700 people and was formed from the factory's former workshop. The interior decoration came mainly from Vorarlberg artists, as the church itself was founded by the Vorarlberg missionary Josef Gorbach . The Tyrolean Peter Sellemond created a large wooden crucifix .

During the Second World War , the church was destroyed by bombs in 1944 and 1945. The parish meanwhile held its services in a theater hall. In 1950 the new church was built according to plans by Josef Vytiska . It is a brick building that can accommodate around 1000 people.

A part of the former factory in front of the church on Schedifkaplatz was demolished according to Vytiska's plans and replaced in 1973 by a parish and residential house, which also houses a kindergarten.

Furnishing

The wooden crucifix by Peter Sellemond from the old church has survived the destruction of the war and is still used in the current church with modern adaptations (Cross of Paradise). A statue of the Virgin Mary by the same artist has also been preserved. The large ceiling picture with Christian symbols comes from Karl Jamöck , the glass windows with Christ monograms were created by Oswin Amann . A round window by Albert Paris Gütersloh depicting the cardinal virtues was originally on the outside of the church, and has been on the ceiling of the Fatima chapel since 1985. In 2005, the Sellemond crucifix was underlaid with a cross made of fused glass by Heinz Ebner, who also designed the tabernacle.
