Maria Lourdes Church

The Maria Lourdes Church is a Roman Catholic parish church in the 12th district of Meidling in Vienna .

history

The church emerged from an emergency church that had been set up in 1923 in a hall rented by students from the Meidlinger Gymnasium in the Menda pavilion at Ruckergasse 1 as a Neuland divine settlement . With funds from the Vienna Church Building Association, a church building was then built in the garden of this house in 1932 according to plans by Josef Haunzwickl . In 1935 it was elevated to a parish church and has been looked after by canons from Klosterneuburg ever since. After the Second World War, however, the building was already in such a poor state of construction and had also become too small for the increased population, so the decision was made to build a new one. From 1956 to 1958, based on plans by Robert Kramreiter, today's church was built, which was consecrated on the centenary of the apparition of Mary in Lourdes . In 1981 the church was renovated and since 1981 it has also housed an Indian congregation. This celebrates their services in the Syro-Malabar and Malankara rites.

Building description

Lattice gate
inner space

The church is located at Haschkagasse 5. It has a bell tower on the side, the nave is set back a little behind the house line, so that a small forecourt is formed in front of the church. The building has two aisles and ends behind the main altar with a colorfully glazed concrete tracery window by Hubert Wilfan , the colors of which reflect the liturgical colors of the church year. The main nave is also closed off on the epistle side by a large colored glass wall depicting the Lauretanian litany and created by Erhard Amadeus Dier . It provides a view of the so-called prayer courtyard , which is planted with greenery and contains images of the Stations of the Cross made of embossed copper by Paul Ocsenasek . There is also an altar with a mosaic of Mary of Lourdes, which is placed there instead of the usual Lourdes grottos. In the side aisle of the church is the altar of the Lady of Lourdes with a wooden statue of Alfred Crepaz from the old church , behind which there is a gold mosaic background. Wooden statues in the side aisle depict Judas Thaddäus , Anthony of Padua , the Sacred Heart and St. Joseph represents.
