The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson is a jazz album by JJ Johnson , which was first released under this title in 1954 on Blue Note Records as a 10-inch LP (BLP 5057). In 1955 The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson, Vol. 3 (BLP 5070) was also released as a 10-inch LP.
In 1955, Blue Note Records merged the material from the three 10-inch LPs created between 1953 and 1955 into two new 12-inch LPs under the title The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson, Volume 1 and Volume 2 (BLP 1505 and 1506).

JJ Johnson had a share in the Blue Note catalog on the compilation Mellow The Mood: Jazz In A Mellow Mood (BLP 5001) even before he worked on Howard McGhee's first 10-inch record (BLP 5012 ). He was also the sideman on Miles Davis ' first two 10-inch records Young Man With A Horn (BLP 5013) and Miles Davis, Vol. 2 (BLP 5022). He later took part in the recordings of Kenny Dorham's 10-inch Afro-Cuban record (BLP 5065).

Now he first appeared as a band leader on the 1953 10-inch record Jay Jay Johnson with Clifford Brown (BLP 5028). The trombonist JJ Johnson gathered modern jazz musicians here : the young trumpeter Clifford Brown , who was at the beginning of a promising career, the saxophonist Jimmy Heath and his brother, the bassist Percy Heath , the pianist John Lewis and the drummer Kenny Clarke . In the same year, the last three were to form the Modern Jazz Quartet with Milt Jackson . The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson (Vol. 2) (BLP 5057) followed in 1954 and The Eminent Jay Jay Johnson, Vol. 3 (BLP 5070) in 1955 .
