The Altmannsdorfer Church is a Roman Catholic parish church, consecrated to St. Oswald , in the 12th district of Meidling in Vienna .

history

An Oswald chapel in the small town of Altmannsdorf , formerly south of Vienna, is mentioned for the first time in 1290 . 1422 is called again a Oswaldkapelle, which together with the rule of Altmannsdorf, a farmyard and fields in 1444 by the last owner Erhart Griesser the Calced Augustinians on the highway was inherited. During the two Turkish sieges of Vienna, this chapel was destroyed and then rebuilt. The chapel, which was rebuilt in 1689, was removed from the parish of Atzgersdorf , to which it had previously belonged, and made independent in 1783 , as the care of the Altmannsdorf village within the extensive parish area was no longer functioning adequately.

After independence, a local cemetery was opened in 1784, the Altmannsdorfer Friedhof . The church building was not in good condition and no longer met the requirements of a parish church. In 1800 the wooden church tower was replaced by a brick one. In 1812 the Order of the Augustinian Shoed was abolished and Johann Baptist Hoffmann acquired the manor in 1818. He initially refused to provide the necessary funds for a new building. He made the condition that a separate gallery be built for him and his family, since he could not be expected to sit in church with the poor brickworkers, who largely made up the sparse population. But when he won a significant sum of money in the so-called Warsaw Lottery, he changed his mind and had a new church built at his own expense. In 1838 the old building was demolished and a new building was erected to the northeast, which the master builder and first mayor of Altmannsdorf, Wenzel Hornek, carried out in 1838/39 according to plans by the architect Franz Lößl . The church was renovated in 1873 and 1926, as well as from 2002 to 2004.

Building description

Statue of St. Augustine, behind the rectory

The church Zum Heiligen Oswald is located in the middle of the historic center of Altmannsdorf, in the middle of the triangular Khleslplatz. The building, which is turned by 90 ° opposite the old church and oriented north-south, is a simple, single-nave church with a straight choir closure. The tower is on the northern front, where statues of Saints John the Baptist and Anna with the child are placed in niches next to the gate . The figures are allusions to the couple whose names are the saints shown. It is also commemorated in an inscription above the entrance portal, which says: Erected by the charity of the respected Mr. Johann Baptist Hoffmann and his pious wife Anna Stiberger . The Latin inscription is a chronogram in which the highlighted letters in Roman numerals give the year 1838. The shape of the church later became exemplary for the Meidlinger parish church.

High altar with St. Oswald by Johann Matthias Ranftl, 1834

Inside the church there are some Nazarene paintings by the most important Austrian painters of the first half of the 19th century. The high altar, which was created by the carpenter Friwitzer according to plans by the architect Franz Lößl, bears the image of St. Oswald before the decisive battle against Cadwallon by Johann Matthias Ranftl from 1834. Two kneeling angels and the baptismal font were created by the sculptor Johann Nepomuk Schaller . Above the high altar is a glass painting by Leopold Kupelwieser depicting the Trinity . On the left side altar you can see St. John the Baptist in the Desert (1839) by Joseph von Führich , on the right side altar you can see St. Anna (1838/39) by Eduard Steinle . The mother of the good advice under the picture of Steinle comes from the old church. Unknown masters created the small pictures Jesus drives the money changers out of the temple and Jesus heals the sick . A large wooden cross from the 18th century and the images of the arrival of the Holy Spirit , the carrying of the cross and the crucifixion of Christ probably come from the old church .

In front of the church there is a larger than life stone figure of St. Augustine from 1723. It is a reminder of the former manorial rule of the Augustinians in Altmannsdorf and was originally designed as a fountain. Under the Khleslplatz there are numerous water veins, the strength of which decreased so much in the 19th century that even the use of a pump was not enough to operate the fountain. The remaining water is drained into a canal, whereby the church and the statue could be drained.

Rectory

The Altmannsdorf rectory is located at Khleslplatz 10. Here stood a building that was acquired by the Augustinians in 1736 by the Schottenstift and had served as a parsonage since 1783. In the middle of the 19th century it was used as a poor house for a short time. In 1859 it was finally rebuilt as a one-story building. Two figures of Saints Mary and Joseph with child , which originally stood at the church, were placed above the entrance .
