The Roman Catholic Church of Oberkorn (also: St-Stephanus-Kirche or Church of Saint-Étienne ; lux . : Kierch vun Uewerkuer ; French : Église Saint-Étienne) in Differdingen , district Oberkorn (lux .: Uewerkuer), belongs to Parish Déifferdeng Saint-François-d'Assise and thus to the deanery of Esch-sur-Alzette and the Archbishopric of Luxembourg (lux .: Äerzbistum Lëtzebuerg ), which includes the entire Grand Duchy of Luxembourg .

The patron saint of the church is Saint Stephen ( lux . : Hellege Stephanus , French name variant: Saint Étienne ), whose feast is celebrated on December 26th.

history

The parish of Oberkorn is one of the oldest parishes in Luxembourg. It is assumed that at least two parish churches already existed here before. The direct previous building, a baroque parish church, was built in 1737. The church tower has been preserved from this previous building.

For the first time in 1803, then finally in 1861, the parish of Differdange was detached from the parish of Oberkorn and became an independent parish.

The Oberkorn Church, built in 1911/1912, was consecrated on July 1, 1912 by Bishop Johannes Joseph Koppes . In 1996/1997 the church was renovated. On November 5, 2002, the steeple was added to the inventory of the list of classified monuments in Luxembourg.

location

The church is located at the intersection of Rue Prommenschenkel and Rue de Belvaux (N31) on a hill above the village of Differdange. The Oberkorn district is grouped around the church. To the north, next to the church, is the Marcel Noppeney cultural center .

The building of today's church was built in 1911/1912 in a neo-Gothic style. The nave is about 44 meters long and 25.40 meters wide. The vault is about 14.20 meters high.

The main entrance portal to the northeast is flanked or narrowed by the church tower and a round gate tower . Above the portal there is a round window (rosette) with a representation of St. Caecilia. Outside, in niches in the church tower, there are copies of statues of the Immaculata (Immaculate Conception of Mary), St. Stephen and St. Nicholas. The originals of the statues are in the church in the transept next to the right side altar.

The choir was redesigned in 1997 by Adolphe (Ady) Deville on the occasion of the renovation of the church. On the current tabernacle column there is a crucifix made around 1500 . The image of Christ of Orval behind the tabernacle column comes from him. On the left in the choir there is a glass painting depicting Mary giving St. Dominic holding a rosary and depicting the Holy Family on the right . Both pictures by J. Bradtke (created around 1900).

The left and right side altars come from the Greeff workshop. The left side altar shows a statue of the Comforter of the Afflicted, St. Joachim and St. Anna. In the upper niche the statue of Immaculata. The right side altar has a statue of St. Nicholas, St. Bartholomew and St. Laurentius up. In the upper niche the risen Christ. Other liturgical furnishings (e.g. statues, baptismal font, pulpit etc.) of the church also come from the previous Baroque building. The painting of the stoning of St. Stephanus is by JP Huttert and dates back to 1737. To the left and right of the painting there are parts of the high altar of the baroque predecessor of today's church. In the body of the pulpit there are medallions depicting the four evangelists . The Stations of the Cross date from the early 20th century.

Stained glass window

The six stained glass windows in the nave are by Camille Croat and depict popular saints (St. Barbara, St. Elisabeth, St. Irmina, St. Willibrord, St. Stephen, St. Nicholas).

organ

The organ was manufactured in 1930 by the Georges Haupt company from Lintgen . It has remained largely unchanged to this day. Only in 1985 during a renovation was an electropneumatic action installed.
