Church of St. Joachim and St. Anna

The town church of St. Joachim and St. Anna (in Czech Kostel svatého Jáchyma a svaté Anny ) in Sankt Joachimsthal (today: Jáchymov ) in the Karlovy Vary Region in the Czech Republic was built from 1534 to 1540 as the first Lutheran church in Bohemia . The original Renaissance building was consecrated to the Catholic Church in 1624 and redesigned from 1764 to 1785 in the late Baroque style. After a fire from 1874 to 1876, it was given its present-day Gothic look.

history

The history of the church is closely related to the town's flourishing silver mining in the 16th century, which was one of the most important Bohemian settlement centers with around 18,000 inhabitants. After introducing the Reformation in Joachimsthal as early as 1523, the Count Schlick had the representative church built on a steep slope in the upper part of the city with space for up to 3000 visitors and set up their burial place in it. The construction work, which began with the laying of the foundation stone on the Monday after Trinity 1534, was placed in the hands of the Joachimsthal master builder Hans Kopp. Pastor Johannes Mathesius began his service on November 25, 1537 in the still unfinished church . Under the direction of the master builder Johann Münnich, the construction work was completed in 1540.

In the following three decades the church received its fittings . In 1542 a bell was hung up, and three years later the brothers Hieronymus and Lorenz Schlick had one from Lucas Cranach the Elder. Ä. set up the made altar. In the course of the re-Catholicization of Bohemia, the church was consecrated as a Catholic church in 1624. It received the patronage of Saint Joachim and Saint Anne.

The extensive late Baroque redesign of the interior from 1764 to 1785 included the erection of new side altars, the construction of a new sacristy, the redecoration of the patronage stalls and the installation of a new main altar dedicated to the Holy Trinity and Saint Anne. The city fire on March 31, 1873 destroyed large parts of the church, of which only the surrounding walls and the entrance portal remained. The entire interior was burned. According to plans by the architect Josef Mocker and under the direction of Karl Franz Richter from Johanngeorgenstadt , reconstruction began on April 14, 1874, the cost of which was 88,000 guilders largely financed by loans and donations. In 1875 the church received an organ from the Oettinger company GF Steinmeyer & Co. In the following years wealthy citizens donated new inventory, including the altar and pulpit from the Lehner sculptor's workshop in Vienna.

On May 3, 1958, the building of the church was entered in the State Register of Cultural Monuments .

After the church fell into disrepair in the period after the Second World War, the town of Jáchymov, as the owner, pushed ahead with the gradual renovation from 1981, which was concluded with a festive rededication on September 13, 1992.
