The church of St. Stephan in Cumbel in the Val Lumnezia in the Swiss canton of Graubünden originally dates from the early 16th century.

history

Together with Roman Capuchin Fathers of the Rhaetian Mission, who campaigned for the restoration of Catholicism after the Reformation , Italian architects and builders also came to the Graubünden valleys; the construction of magnificent churches and chapels was intended to strengthen the Catholic faith community. Cumbel also owes the baroque style of the parish church of St. Stephen to this.

construction

Exterior

The originally late Gothic building from the early 16th century was partially abandoned at the end of the 17th century under the auspices of the Catholic Fathers and extended by a further choir and a sacristy . The old late Gothic choir thus became the antechamber of the square baroque choir. The old ship was the same width as the new one, but only about 11 meters long. The sacristy is attached to the end of the choir in the Italian style. The nave and choir are covered with a barrel vault.

In 1689 the sgraffiti with early baroque architectural motifs, which are otherwise unusual in the region, were also created on the outer walls . Except for the south and east walls, they were whitewashed in 1907, but were removed again in 1998 for an exterior renovation.

The tower is on the north side. The lower part is bricked, the upper part timbered. The pointed helmet, covered with wooden shingles, is more recent.

Interior

The exposed wall paintings in the nave are probably by Hans Ardüser from Davos . On the right they show the remains of an adoration and a battle painting, on the left ten scenes from the life of Mary, including the remains of a row of apostles and, on the choir arch, Anna the third and female saints.

The high altar was created in 1763 by Johannes Trubmann from Vinschgau . The side altars date from around 1715, the choir stalls and the polygonal pulpit were built around 1690.

Ossuary

Ossuary

The facade of the two-storey ossuary in the northwest corner of the cemetery shows the Mother of God between Saint Stephen and Mauritius , including purgatory. There are skulls in a row of eight cube-shaped niches.
