The Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God ( Serbian Црква Успења Пресвете Богородице ) is a Serbian Orthodox church in Hildesheim - Himmelsthür . Until 2015 it was the episcopal church of the Serbian Orthodox Diocese for Central Europe .

History and architecture

The church was built between 1902 and 1904 according to plans by Adelbert Hotzen as a chapel for the evangelical women's home Himmelsthür founded by Pastor Bernhard Isermeyer . It is a simple neo-Gothic brick - church hall with extruded, polygonal closing sanctuary and roof skylights . Under the church there are two basement floors that originally served as ironing and sorting rooms for the diaconal facility. In the mid-1970s, the Diakonische Werke Himmelsthür moved to Hildesheim-Sorsum . The last Protestant service was celebrated on September 9, 1977 in the old asylum church.

In 1978 the Serbian Orthodox Diocese for Central Europe bought the church and the adjoining buildings and set up their bishopric with monastery and meeting center there. After the reorganization of the Orthodox liturgy , especially the equipment with iconostasis and icons , the church was on the title in 1979 Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God ordained . In 1992 it also became a parish church . With the establishment of the Austria-Switzerland diocese in 2010/2011, the Alpine countries were removed from the jurisdiction of the previous diocese of Central Europe.

In 2015 the church lost its status as an episcopal church. Düsseldorf is now the seat of the diocese.
