Ostersundom Church

The Church of Östersundom ( Finnish Östersundomin kirkko , Swedish Östersundoms kyrka ) is an Evangelical Lutheran church in Östersundom , a district of the Finnish capital Helsinki . Built between 1753 and 1754, it is the oldest church in Helsinki.

Östersundom, which belonged to the municipality of Sipoo until 2009 , received its own chapel at the end of the 17th century . In the Great Northern War (1700-1721) and the War of the hats (1741-1743) it was heavily damaged and had to be demolished in the 18th century. The current church was built in 1753–1754 in place of the destroyed church. This makes the church of Östersundom the oldest church in today's Helsinki city area, if one does not take into account the Old Church of Karuna , built in 1685–86 and moved to the Seurasaari open-air museum in 1912 . When the western part of Sipoo was connected to Helsinki in 2009, the church of Östersundom came to the Evangelical Lutheran Michaelsgemeinde of the district of Mellunkylä .

The church of Östersundom is a wooden church with a rather unusual floor plan: the nave is beveled at the corners , so that the floor plan is an elongated octagon. A vestibule has been added to the west, above which a small church tower rises. A sacristy is attached to the northeast side of the nave . The free-standing stack of bells dates from 1895.
