The Church of Stenkumla is a country church that belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Stenkumla. It is located inland on the Swedish island of Gotland , 10 km south of Visby .
On the hill in Stenkumla the last public execution in Sweden was carried out in 1876 with Konrad Petterson Lundqvist Tector. He is buried in the cemetery of Stenkumla Church.
Church building
The original church was built in the 12th century. At the beginning of the 13th century, the church tower that belongs to today's church building was built. The present choir dates from around 1250. The church got its present form around 1300 when the nave was built. At the same time the tower was raised and the choir got its ogival east window. The sacristy was probably added at that time. The frescoes in the choir date from the 13th century, those in the nave from the middle of the 15th century. They were carried out by the Passion Master.
Sveno Petri Boetius, pastor in Stenkumla from 1659 to 1675, is probably the one who can be recognized by a weathered inscription on the old church bell of the daughter church of Västerhejde.
