The Church of Vrigstad (Swedish: Vrigstads kyrka ) is a church building of the Swedish Church in Vrigstad in the Swedish municipality of Sävsjö .

History and architecture

The stone-built church was built in 1865/1866 according to designs by Fredrik Wilhelm Scholander . Before that there was a small wooden church dating back to the 12th century to the south of the current location. The dilapidated church was demolished. The steeple was built on the north side of the church. The choir is narrower than the nave and has a three-sided termination to the south.

In 1963, the building was renovated under the direction of the architect Lars Stalin , whereby the old wooden decoration in symmetrical patterns was retained and developed. In this context, the windows of the choir were decorated with stained glass designed by Bo Beskow . Inside the church there are twelve columns that separate the nave from the aisles. They carry twelve chandeliers made of brass , each containing a wooden object that represents one of the attributes of the twelve apostles. The objects can also be found on the altar table.

An altar painting by the painter Pehr Hörberg from 1778 in the church is remarkable. The pulpit also dates from the 18th century. The stone baptismal font from the Romanesque period is significantly older .
