Pehr Hörberg (born January 31, 1746 in Virestad , Småland , † January 24, 1816 in Risinge , Östergötland ) was a Swedish painter , engraver and composer .

Life

Pehr Hörberg was first a shepherd, then a farmer, but also trained himself as a painter. It was not until he was 37 that he had the means to attend the academy in Stockholm, but here he quickly earned the award and reputation of the best Swedish painter twice.

In 1790 he moved to Ölstorp in Ostergötland, became a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1797 and later became court painter to the then Crown Prince Karl Johann .

He painted 87 altar panels, most of which were commissioned by various parishes , especially in Småland and Östergötland. The number of his other paintings depicting sacred and profane objects is over 600. He also left a lot of copperplate engravings based on hand drawings, etc., including drawings based on antiquities.

One of his most successful frescoes is the fights of the titans in Finspång Castle . Hörberg was very inventive; he succeeded better in the sublime and holy than in the lovely and beautiful.

At the same time he had a great disposition for mechanics, he made a new type of violin with positives. His musical compositions are original and breathe deep emotion.
