The fortified church Bekokten is one of the Transylvanian Saxons of the village Bărcuț (German Bekokten ) built fortified church in Transylvania (today in the Brașov district , Romania ) in the Schenker chair.

church

Only the bell tower remains of the medieval church. In 1845 the old church, whose roof approach is visible on the east side of the tower, was removed and rebuilt in 1846.

The bell tower was built in the second half of the 15th century, has a square floor plan and has 3 m thick walls on the ground floor. Access to the tower is via a staircase as thick as the wall on the two basement floors. The belfry is on the fifth floor, cantilevered on trestles and boarded. There are loopholes on the floors below, the niches of which expand inward and are vaulted with round arches.

In 1846 today's church was built as a hall church. The church interior is covered by a barrel vault, which is divided into five fields by four belt arches. The work was carried out by Johann Frank from Mergeln . In 1847 the new church was consecrated.

Furnishing

The interior was created in 1846 by the master carpenter and organist Michael Krieger. The baroque altar by the Schäßburg master Johann Folbarth dates from the years 1766–1767. A Latin inscription reports its creation.

The pulpit was also made by Holbarth in 1792. The pulpit lid is painted and topped with a wooden figure representing the good shepherd. The stone baptismal font was erected in 1847.

In 1719 a positive was bought by the organ builder Martinus Hammer from Sibiu , which was renovated in 1741. In 1765/1766 the Kronstadt organ builder Johann Raab built a new organ that was placed above the altar. During the church renovation in 1846, the organ was moved to the west gallery. It has 22 registers, 2 manuals and a pedal. In 1866 the old organ was sold to Seligstadt and a new organ was acquired by Samuel Binder from Schäßburg.

In 1791 a tower clock was installed. The big bell from the pre-Reformation period bears the inscription "o rex glorie veni cum".

The fortified church

The medieval curtain wall is preserved up to a height of 4 m. The remains of two towers are preserved on the inside of the southern wall. In the south-west of today's curtain wall, an arched entrance can be seen. The height of the former battlement can be seen from a protruding wall of the curtain wall.
