Kirchenwaldtunnel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Kirchenwald tunnel replaces the existing A2 motorway at the northern foot of the Loppers between Hergiswil and Acheregg near Stansstad in the Swiss canton of Nidwalden . It was mainly to protect against falling rocks or even rockslide created after in the past several times partially-ton boulders had fallen onto the highway. In order to prevent a massive rock fall from completely blocking the important transit axis due to the lack of local bypasses between mountain and lake, the decision was made to undertake this expensive construction.

facts and figures

  • Length: 1.6 km each
  • Construction period: 1988–2006 or 2008
  • Construction costs: CHF 450 million
  • Vehicles per day: approx. 37,000

situation

In addition to the north and south bores, a connecting tunnel to the A8 towards Brünig was built. Up to now it was only possible to drive on the A2 either north or south from the A8. Coming from the south, it was not possible to branch off directly onto the A8, which meant that the center of the village of Stansstad was burdened with through traffic. The Kirchenwaldtunnel Süd was opened in 2006, the north tube and the connecting tunnel , which branches off inside the mountain from the north tube and flows out of the mountain parallel to the existing Lopper tunnel, in December 2008. The two tubes are connected by escape tunnels. There is a speed limit of 80 km / h, which is electronically monitored.

East of the tunnel, the motorway crosses the narrow lake between Lake Lucerne and Lake Alpnach via the Acheregg Bridge .
