Kirchhofen is a district or a district in the municipality of Sarnen in the canton of Obwalden .

geography

Kirchhofen is located southwest of the actual village of Sarnen and is connected to it by the almost completely built-up Kirchstrasse. The Goldmatt district adjoins Kirchhofen to the south-east. This extends down to Lake Sarnen and is characterized by individual construction methods, some of which are villa-like properties.

history

Count Ulrich von Lenzburg granted the Beromünster monastery three quarters of its rights to the church in Sarnen and the "Lower Court". This lower courtyard was later named Kirchhof or Kirchhofen because of its affiliation with the nearby church .

For a long time the Mühlekanal was an important lifeline of the Kirchhofen district. Its water drove, among other things, a mill almost 500 years ago, which was first mentioned in 1534, but was probably built around 1500. The building still exists today and houses a restaurant, which also hosts cultural events. The Blattibach, also called Mühlebach, has not existed since around 1960.

A vineyard was planted in 2008 on the slope that adjoins the quarter to the northwest.

Attractions

The quarter is characterized by the parish church of St. Peter and Paul , with an adjoining cemetery, ossuary chapel St. Michael and rectory. The villagescape of Kirchhofen is classified in the inventory of protected sites in Switzerland (ISOS) as a site of national importance in Switzerland. In the quarter is the Hofmatt large house from 1643, which houses an art gallery.

Transport links

The Wilerstrasse leads through the quarter, which leads to the Wilen district and on to Giswil . A Postbus line runs from Sarnen train station to Oberwilen here.
