Kirsten Boyd Johnson (born October 12, 1965 in Seattle , Washington ) is an American camerawoman and film producer who increasingly works as a film director and screenwriter for documentaries .

Life

Born in Seattle, Washington in 1965, Kirsten Johnson studied at Brown University and graduated in 1987 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts. She later studied at La fémis in Paris.

The 2003 short documentary Asylum , starring Johnson behind the camera, was nominated for an Oscar. She acted as camerawoman for The Invisible War , which was also nominated for an Oscar, as well as for Citizenfour , which was awarded an Oscar. In January 2016, she presented her documentary Cameraperson at the Sundance Film Festival , which she also directed. She also directed the documentary Dick Johnson Is Dead , which she presented at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020 .

In 2016, Johnson became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .
