The Kiruna FF is a football club from the city of Kiruna in Sweden . The team from the province of Norrbotten County , founded in 1970, is Sweden's northernmost football team.

history

The Kiruna FF was founded on December 21, 1970 as a merger of the football teams of Kiruna AIF , IFK Kiruna , Kebne IK and Kiruna BK . While Kiruna AIF , IFK Kiruna and Kebne IK had played in the third division several times, Kiruna BK did not appear nationwide . The club, which emerged from the fourth and fifth division at the time, began playing in the 1971 season in the fourth-class Division 4 Norrbotten Norra .

In the second year of existence, Kiruna FF won the season in 1972, but failed in the promotion games. The following year the success in the league was repeated and the club was able to rise directly this time. After relegation was initially successful, the relegation followed in 1975. Then the team commuted several times between the league levels and was only able to establish itself in the third division from 1984. First she occupied midfield here and survived as fourth in the table in 1986 a league reform at the game level.

In 1988, Kiruna FF rose as the season winner of the third-class Division 2 Norra with one point ahead of Enköpings SK for the first time in the second division. There the club narrowly missed the march into the Allsvenskan when the season ended third in the table with two points behind Hammarby IF and Vasalunds IF . After a sixth place in the following season, the team moved in 1991 as the winner of the spring series in the north in the promotion round to Allsvenskan. There only three wins, so that as the bottom of the table, the promotion was missed.

Kiruna FF could not build on the success and was relegated to the third division in the following season. The sporting decline was primarily associated with the drastic decline in sponsorship by the LKAB mining company . As a result, foreign players, as in the past from the former Soviet Union , Finland and Norway , could no longer be financed and the focus had to be on their own offspring.

It was not until coach Hans-Olov Björnström, teacher at the football grammar school in Kiruna, that he started his coaching activity in 2003 after years of relegation battle in Norrland division 2 - Kiruna FF was able to make it to fourth place in the table in 2005 with a very young team after a league reform, the newly established, third-class Division 1 qualify. After the qualification, some top performers left the club, so that the team, as bottom of the table with only one win of the season - despite national player Nigel Henry from Trinidad & Tobago and U19 national player Jonas Lantto - had to relegate. Coach Björnström resigned after this season.

In the 2007 season Kiruna FF played after another change in personnel in Division 2 Norrland again against relegation. With luck, on the last day of the match, a draw at Infjärdens SK after the equalization in stoppage time with a penalty by Henrik Hannu secured the third from bottom place in the final table and in the subsequent relegation round Sunnanå SK after a 0-0 away draw with a 1-0 Home success defeated. The following year failed as bottom of the league and as table ninth under Division 3 Norra Norrland , the direct rise was missed.
