The Kiirunavaara (Mountain of ptarmigan , even Kirunavaara ) is one of two Erzberge and namesake of the northern Swedish city of Kiruna .
The mountain is 749 meters high. High -quality iron ore with a high magnetite content is mined there by the Kiruna iron ore mine. The deposit has an iron content of 60 to 70 percent, currently at a depth of 1,150 meters. The length of the underground route system corresponds to the distance from Berlin to Heidelberg .
The other ore mountain of the Kiruna iron deposit is neighboring Luossavaara , but mining ended in 1985. In both mountains the apatite iron ore lies between layers of syenite porphyry and quartz porphyry and has an iron content of around 60 percent.
