The Kiso Seibutsugaku Kenkyūjo ( Japanese 基礎 生物学 研究所 , "National Institute for Basic Biology ", English National Institute for Basic Biology , short: NIBB) is one of five Japanese research institutions that are part of the " National Research Institutes for Natural Sciences " ( NINS) heard. As a corporation under public law, the NINS is part of an “umbrella organization for cooperation and interdisciplinary research between universities” .

The Research Institute for Basic Life Science Research, which is based in the Myōdaiji district in Okazaki , Aichi Prefecture , was founded in May 1977 as a general research institute of the Ministry of Culture ( 文部省 , Monbushō ). In 1981 it was merged with the Institute of Molecular Science to form the "state and community research organization Okazaki" ( 岡 崎 国立 共同 研究 機構 ). In the course of the reorganization, the institute was converted into a corporation in 2004 and subordinated to the umbrella organization for scientific research.

In addition to teaching, the main task of the institute is interdisciplinary basic research with a focus on the following seven research areas:

  1. Cell biology
  2. Developmental biology
  3. Neurobiology
  4. Evolutionary Biology and Biodiversity
  5. Environmental biology
  6. Theoretical biology
  7. Imaging procedures

The institute works with the “Research Center for Radioisotopes” ( ラ ジ オ ア イ ソ ト ー プ 実 験 セ ン タ ー ) and the Okazaki Institute for Integrative Bioscience ( 岡 崎 統 合 バ イ オ サ イ エ ン ス セ ン タ ー ).
