Kitaōji Rosanjin ( Japanese 北大 路 魯山 人 ; actually Kitaōji Fusajirō (北大 路 房 次郎); born March 23, 1883 in Kyōto ; died December 21, 1959 in Yokohama ( Kanagawa Prefecture )) was a Japanese artist and gourmet.

life and work

Kitaōji Rosanjin began his artistic career as a calligrapher. From 1915 to 1917 he studied the manufacture of porcelain in a Kutani oven in Kanazawa . Then he settled in Kita-Kamakura and built his own kiln there. Rosanjin began designing and producing ceramics partly because he was a passionate believer in good Japanese cuisine and found the existing ceramics not quite suitable for it. He modified ceramics from earlier times very knowledgeably and created his own in a modern form.

Most of its pre- Pacific War production consisted of porcelain inspired by the Imari blue and white porcelain and Kutani-style ceramics. After the war he concentrated on earthenware, inspired by Bizen ceramics and Mino ceramics .

Remarks

  1. Kutani pottery (九 谷 焼) was originally produced in Ishikawa Prefecture . Often the product is designed in yellow-green with structures in black.
