Kläwicke

Origin and meaning

The Sorbian name Klaw is considered to be the origin of the name , a derivation (shrink form) of the church baptismal name Nicolaus . With the help of the suffix -k (including the spelling -cke , -ik or -ke as well as the derivative ending -i ) the name gets an additional meaning ( diminutive , nickname , expression for disdain or mockery ). The names Kläwi and Klewi are Alemannic - Swabian derivatives of Nikolaus ( Klaus ). The name Kläwicke has been documented since at least 1680.

The following variants of the name are known: Kläbicke, Kläricke, Klarike, Klawicke, Kleewicke, Klewicke and Klewiken.

Geographical distribution

The main areas of distribution in Germany are the federal states of Berlin and Brandenburg and Baden-Württemberg ; before 1945 the name was also common in Brandenburg / Neumark (now part of Poland ).
