Balmat, who started for the CS Chamonix, started for the first time at the Olympic Winter Games in 1924 in his home country Chamonix-Mont-Blanc for an international tournament. There he reached 15th place in ski jumping from the normal hill with jumps on 36 and 39 meters, making him the most successful participant in his country in this competition. In the individual of the Nordic combined he reached a 10th place overall after a 13th place in jumping and a 9th place in cross-country skiing . Four years later he started again at the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland . He could no longer build on his achievements from 1924 and only came in 24th in ski jumping and only in 28th place in the combination.
