Mimumesa is a genus of digger wasps (Spheciformes) from the Crabronidae family. There are 29 known species worldwide, 10 of which are distributed in the Palearctic . 8 species occur in Europe.

features

Some species of the genus have a strongly stem-shaped tapered abdomen. The abdomen of the Central European species is completely black in color. The genus can be distinguished from the similar genus Mimesa mainly by the well-developed frontal furrow, which extends to the transverse furrow below the antennae base. In the similar genus it is short or absent.

Way of life

The females lay their nests in rotten wood or in the ground. The multicellular nests are provided with cicadas from the family of dwarf cicadas (Cicadellidae) or Delphacidae . Five to ten animals are introduced per cell. The prey is held in flight by means of the middle pair of legs, and very small cicadas are only grabbed with the mandibles .
